Candidates

Democratic Party Presidential nominee - Barack Obama

Early Years

Barack Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4th, 1961. His father, Barack Obama Sr., was born and raised in a small village in Kenya, where he grew up herding goats with his own father, who was a domestic servant to the British.

Barack's mother, Ann Dunham, grew up in small-town Kansas. Her father worked on oil rigs during the Depression, and then signed up for World War II after Pearl Harbor, where he marched across Europe in Patton's army. Her mother went to work on a bomber assembly line, and after the war, they studied on the G.I. Bill, bought a house through the Federal Housing Program, and moved west to Hawaii.

It was there, at the University of Hawaii, where Barack's parents met. His mother was a student there, and his father had won a scholarship that allowed him to leave Kenya and pursue his dreams in America.

Barack's father eventually returned to Kenya, and Barack grew up with his mother in Hawaii, and for a few years in Indonesia. Later, he moved to New York, where he graduated from Columbia University in 1983.

U.S. Senator, Michigan - Carl Levin

Time Magazine recently named Carl Levin as one of the ten best Senators in the nation, reporting that he has “gained respect from both parties for his attention to detail and deep knowledge of policy,” and that “his carefully researched, thoughtful remarks carry great weight with his colleagues.”

Since 1979, Carl has represented the people of Michigan in the United States Senate, where he has fought for Michigan jobs and the Michigan economy; for affordable and accessible health care; for the Great Lakes and a clean, safe environment; for high quality education; and for Social Security and prescription drug coverage, agriculture programs, and the roads and infrastructure that benefit so many Michigan citizens and businesses.

A Senate colleague once remarked on the floor of the Senate that Carl “adds new meaning to ‘fighting like a pit bull.’ Every day, there is Senator Levin, making sure, ‘Hey, what about Michigan?’”

U.S. Congress, 4th Congressional District - Andrew Concannon

Andrew ConcannonAt its core, this campaign is about getting our District’s voice back in the Congress.  Voters have made clear to me they view the vital issues which face us – a struggling economy, a mortgage crisis, worries about healthcare and concerns about our role in the World – the same way I do.  When I am elected I intend to:

  • vote to invest in middle class tax cuts – not tax cuts for the wealthy and big oil;push for change in how we address trade with foreign nations and will focus my efforts to make foreign trade fair to ensure that it benefits those on Main St., and not just those on Wall St.;
  • work to implement policy changes to increase energy production from alternative fuel sources now with our District as a hub for this growth;
  • help struggling homeowners with mortgage relief instead of bailing out banks

State Representative, 104th House District - Roman Grucz

Roman Grucz

Michigan today is at a crossroads. The decisions that are made in Lansing in the next few years will determine Michigan's course for generations. We cannot afford to send "parking deck politicians" and the same old "good old boys" to Lansing. Not this time. We cannot continue to support the same old people doing the same old things in the same old ways. We must begin to move in a new direction.

We need to create good jobs without sacrificing our environment. We need to keep our neighborhood schools open and provide equal per pupil funding for all children in Michigan. We need to make good decisions, choices based not on party dictates but on sound judgment and reason. It is time to put an end to partisan bickering. It is time to put citizen interests before special interests.

County Commissioner - 1st District - Bernie Soutar

I believe government must reflect the needs of the community. As voters, you should demand action from your representatives in government.  As a business person, I recognize the constraints placed on county government by limited funding.  We have to be creative in our planning and flexible in meeting the needs of competing interests.

Our Community Begins With You and Me

County Commissioner, 5th District - Ross Richardson

I’m a candidate for County Commission because we need a county government that is responsive and accountable to the public.  County government has to be operated for the benefit of us, the taxpayers and citizens, its customers.
I want to know how you think your tax dollars should be spent.  If I am elected, I will continue to ask for your input and advice.  We are all in this together.  We share the responsibility to get the most out of our government.
Remember that it’s our government.  The power has to shift from elected officials and hired hands back to the people.  County government must be both accessible and accountable to us.

(The 5th District is east Traverse City, Traverse Heights, and Garfield Township east of Keystone Road and south of South Airport Road).

As a County Commissioner, I will listen to our citizens and:

County Commissioner, 8th District - Phil Scott

The Commissioner's seat for the 8th District has been held by a single political party for over 40 years. It's time for change in leadership and direction. We can end the "Good Old Boy’s" county government. We need to give voters more control. We need to elect County Road Commission seats. We need county government to be open and accountable. Let's move ahead together.

Time for a new perspective within the County Commission

  • A vote for the election of road commission seats
  • A vote for real, collaborative planning and decision making between Townships and the County
  • A vote to end the “Good Old Boy” system of government
  • A vote for Integrity
  • A vote for responsible spending of your tax dollars
  • A vote for Change

I have a broad range of experience in the management of government programs:

  • Program management and contract administration
  • Budget controls and budget management

East Bay Township Supervisor - Gail Maison

The citizens of East Bay Township deserve the best candidate. It’s time to change the way business is  conducted. The best interests of the residents MUST BE the number one priority of the elected township board. No more personal agendas and no more outsourcing of services.  Keep it local.

Green Lake Township Supervisor - Tom Karas

Tom KarasThere is a demonstrated lack of leadership in this township. Whether you see it in empty storefronts, the lack of a community police officer, access to recycling opportunity, or the clear cutting of ten acres of township property for a few well connected friends, Green Lake Township deserves better.

This is the time for local government to be reaching out to citizens and providing guidance and opportunity. Whether it is the energy crisis, the state of the economy, or just putting the best foot of the community forward to new opportunity, we are entering a very challenging time and the ‘old school’ method has failed us. It is time for new leadership.
